The American Curriculum in Dubai

In Dubai, some schools follow the educational framework of the American Curriculum. The main focus of the American school curriculum is focused on academic excellence and creativity, in turn, developing sound critical thinking skills to assist students in the future.

The American curriculum prepares pupils for key learning stages in their education journey in a holistic way. Along the way, children have the opportunity to acquire points for subjects across the curriculum. Thereafter, students will be required to take regular tests and eventually participate in SAT exams- requirements for academic advancement including job prospects and university admission.

The core subjects of the American school curriculum include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Arts
  • History
  • Geography
  • Social studies

In the American curriculum, the education framework is split into different key stages.

Elementary School

Elementary school is considered as the initial stage of a pupil’s education journey. In the elementary stage, pupils will learn to read, write and acquire basic math skills. Moreover, the elementary school stage offers young pupils the chance to explore the educational world in more detail and learn about culture.

Middle School

During the middle school phase, pupils are introduced to the core subjects in more detail, gaining further knowledge to prepare them for their journey to high school. By gaining knowledge on subjects across the curriculum, students are given the responsibility of their own education, allowing them to take ownership of their learning with more advanced knowledge of key subjects.

High School

High school students are immersed into the world of college admissions and the workplace. During the high school stage, students are encouraged to explore their interests and prepare themselves for life after school.

During this phase, students may be required to take SAT tests in order to gain admission to the college of their choice.

How Does the American Curriculum Compare to the British Curriculum?

One key difference between the British curriculum and American Curriculum is the number of stages in the overall framework. In the UK, there are 6 key stages. In the American curriculum, there are 3 main stages including elementary school, middle school, and high school. With this being said, children remain in compulsory secondary education until 18 years old in America. After 16, it becomes optional for children in the UK.

Another key difference is in the assessment method. In the UK, children are tested at key points through their educational journey including at the end of key Stage 2 and in the GCSE period at the end of key stage 4.

In the American curriculum, students can earn credits in each subject throughout their education. This points-based model is also complimented by continuous assessment through testing and coursework. As in the UK, students are required to take grading exams at key points.

At the end of the high school period, the American curriculum calls for pupils wishing to proceed to college to take SAT and ACT tests to determine admission to their chosen college.

As for subject choice, both UK and US schools allow students to choose specialized subjects to study at key GCSE and SAT stages. These will be taught alongside core subjects like maths, literature and science.
